One of the helping methods for SOS is the family streghtening program. At the moment there are 143 families with around 250 children participating the program in Gikongoro. The families in the program can have a microloan for example to start a business or improve their agricultrure. After the loan is paid back they can have more. The families in the program get also help for the childrens’ school fees.
The families for this program are chosen by the community together with SOS. Families do not apply for the program. This is also the reason why there is no jealousy towards to the families chosen for the program.
I want to tell a story of one woman participating in the program. This woman has a six years old daughter and she is also taking care of her teenaged nephew since his mother died. The husband left somewhere when the girl was a baby and he dissapeared for good.
Couple of years ago this woman was chosen for the program. With the loan she started her own store. After she got her business going she paid the loan. Now she has been able to build a house for her and her family with the money she’s getting from her business. SOS helped her to build the roof.
We met also another woman who is participating this program.
